Located in 301 S. Border Ave., Weslaco, TX, the Valley Nature Center introduces students and families to the environmental sciences and the wonder of nature through, hands-on learning and guided exploration. The VNC is working to replace the 70-year old building which has housed the educational facilities, to give students and families safe access to better environmental educational opportunities. As any environmental education center facility should, it will act as an example of good natural resource management and conservation for present and future generations. The facility’s BMPs are: Rainwater collection, Green, Pervious walking trails, Pervious service road and a treatment wetland with native and riparian plantings. Current Status: Boardwalk completed (under TPWD Recreation Trails Grant), Approximately 75% of native wetland vegetation installed.
Amigos Del Valle Center, San Juan
LID Phase ILocated on 615 W. 1st St., San Juan, TX the city was in the first stage of repairing the roof for the Amigos del Valle building and it gave the city the opportunity to integrate to the project to this LID program. It represented a wonderful leadership opportunity for the city to take the lead on live green roof technologies. Not only will it allow San Juan to take the lead in this type of project, but it may also bring social, aesthetic, environmental, and financial benefits to the City. This facility will include in addition to the green roof, a rainwater harvesting system, rain gardens, a bioswale.

LID Phase ILocated in S Park Dr., La Feria, TX, Recreation Center site is in a prominent location in the community directly across the street from the City’s sports complex where hundreds of children and their families exercise and recreate. It is expected to become a real focal point fort he community. The LID facilities will provide great opportunities to educate local students and the general public. Monte Bella Park, Brownsville
LID Phase ILocated in 2500 block of West Alton Gloor Blvd. Brownsville, Tx, the City is proposing to construct sorely needed park amenities at Monte Bella Trail Park to optimize recreational and ecological use of this park, to encourage outdoor activities while also providing accommodations at present lacking at this site The Monte Bella Trail Park is a 40-acre park adjacent to the World Birding Center. Coursing in the midst of these two parcels of land is a 25-acre resaca or urban waterway that is utilized by area wildlife such as bobcats, ocelots and chachalacas (Mexican pheasant).
